Our Prayers Go Out to the Boston Bombing Victims

Yesterday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon finish line is another reminder of the evil that resides in the hearts of men. One of the victims of the bombing that left a few dead and more than a hundred injured was an eight-year-old boy.

Marathons are often a scene of chaos—especially after the end of a grueling 26.2 mile run. Backpacks and discarded clothing are common sites. But never could we have imagined that the chaos would include mass injury and death. What an awful thing for someone or some group to do.

Some people even kill in the name of their god. Jesus warned that the day would come when people would kill you and think by doing so they would offer a service unto God. Astounding.

Such evil is unspeakable.

I am reminded of the most beloved Psalm—that applies to life and to death:

A Psalm of David (NKJV) 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Death is the last enemy that we are all waiting to be destroyed. Jesus’s resurrection from the dead gives us a true hope, based on a fact of history—a fact that changed all of history—that death will be destroyed once and for all. For now, those who put their hope and faith in Christ who conquered death can know for sure that when death comes, it will not be the end.
