The First Amendment to the Constitution begins, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” Historically, it was understood that the prohibition of an “establishment of religion” meant that the federal government was disallowed from creating a national denomination. There would be no Church of America, like they have the Church of England, officially affiliated with the government. What did the founders mean by the establishment clause? What has the Supreme Court said on it in the last several decades. David Gibbs III is the founder and president of the National Center for Life and Liberty. He has been fighting for religious liberties in the courts of America and in the courts of public opinion for a couple of decades now.
