Many people think the First Amendment to the Constitution demands a strict separation of church and state—even to the point that it supposedly demands a strict separation of God and government. But the reality is, from the first presidential inauguration, that of George Washington in 1789, until the present, all the presidents have sworn in on the Holy Bible and said the oath, “So help me God.” In a few cases, some presidents even said more about the need for the Lord’s help for our country. Historian and author Jane Hampton Cook has worked in the White House and written books on American history for adults and children.
