IF THIS NEW NASA DIRECTOR HAD BEEN TAKING THE “JUDICIAL OATH” (28 USC 453) INSTEAD, SHE MIGHT STILL HAVE POSITIONED HER PALM UPON SAGAN’S BOOK, BUT HER CONCLUDING SENTENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN “SO HELP ME GOD.”

America’s NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Director recently made news by taking her obligatory Oath of Office (5 USC 3331) on a popular philosophy book by Carl Sagan instead of the Bible. Such derogation from tradition offers occasion for a “…recurrence to fundamental principles” as America’s founders put it.

Comfortingly, she did raise her right hand “to the square,” symbolic of “truthfulness, honesty, candor and frankness” as one writer has suggested:

And the Bible would have affirmed such serious sentiments:

●”And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he HELD UP HIS RIGHT HAND and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.” -Daniel 12:7 KJV

Ironic is the fact that Goddard’s father, who inspired his curiosity as a young lad, was apparently named after one of the Bible’s important prophets, Nahum, who had warned of the impending judgment of apostate Nineveh.

Let us pray that this new Director’s conduct would please the God of creation who has so blessed America. I am reminded of the poignant recital from Genesis by early space explorers:
